چکیده

s have been solicited from participants of the 2004 symposium, researchers known to be interested in this area, and readers of relevant research mailing lists. We expect to select approximately 10 abstracts to be presented as papers at the workshop. The program will be available at http://www.cs.wlu.edu/~levy/cogsci2010/ We propose to follow up the workshop with a special issue in Cognitive Science or other relevant journal.

Compositional connectionist structures based on in situ grounded representations

The combination of productivity, dynamics and grounding imposes constraints that require specific architectures for their combined implementation. Grounding of representations can be achieved with specific neuronal assembly structures, which can be distributed over different brain areas. This entails that grounded conceptual representations cannot be copied, transported and pasted to form compo...

Distributed vs. Localist Representations 1

One of the central claims associated with the parallel distributed processing approach popularized by D. E. Rumelhart, J. L. McClelland and the PDP Research Group is that knowledge is coded in a distributed fashion. Localist representations within this perspective are widely rejected. It is important to note, however, that connectionist networks can learn localist representations and many conne...

Dissociations in Performance on Novel Versus Irregular Items: Single-Route Demonstrations With Input Gain in Localist and Distributed Models

Four pairs of connectionist simulations are presented in which quasi-regular mappings are computed using localist and distributed representations. In each simulation, a control parameter termed input gain was modulated over the only level of representation that mapped inputs to outputs. Input gain caused both localist and distributed models to shift between regularity-based and item-based modes...

Cognitive neuroimaging: cognitive science out of the armchair.

Cognitive scientists were not quick to embrace the functional neuroimaging technologies that emerged during the late 20th century. In this new century, cognitive scientists continue to question, not unreasonably, the relevance of functional neuroimaging investigations that fail to address questions of interest to cognitive science. However, some ultra-cognitive scientists assert that these expe...
